Six million people on hospital waiting lists in England
Latest NHS data shows that the number of people on a hospital waiting list in England has reached six million for the first time.
The figure, for the end of November, covers operations such as knee and hip surgery and came before Omicron hit so it is likely these figures will have worsened in the months since.
Approximately one in 20 of the six million have been waiting more than a year.
The data also highlights record delays for those who needed a bed on a ward. More than 120,000 people who were admitted spent more than four hours waiting for a bed - nearly a third of the total. Nearly 13,000 waited over 12 hours - another record high since records began in 2010.
Meanwhile, waits in A&E reached record worst levels in December, with just over 73 per cent of those who arrived at an emergency department seen in four hours.
