Increase in number of new student nurses accepted

New figures show that there has been a huge increase in the number of new student nurses accepted onto courses in the two weeks since A-Level results were awarded.

Following an appeal by England’s chief nursing officer for more people of all ages to join the healthcare profession, UCAS figures show that there are 4,360 more nursing students placed onto courses in England this year than at the same point in 2019 – a 22 per cent rise.

In total 24,330 students have been placed, compared to 19,970 last year, and the increase in England has outpaced other parts of the UK. The NHS estimates that over 5,000 more people could be accepted onto courses this year than last, with places still available through clearing.

Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England, said: “The news that there has been a 22 per cent increase in applications for nursing degrees is a testament to the inspiring work of NHS staff throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and ensures that our workforce will continue to go from strength to strength. The NHS will always need compassionate, talented and expert individuals, whether you are straight out of school or looking to find a more rewarding career later on in life.
