200,000 tests by end of May, says Prime Minister
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to reach 200,000 tests for coronavirus a day by the end of May, after the government claims to have hit its target of 100,000 tests on 3 May.
Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions for the first time since leaving hospital, Johnson said ‘capacity currently exceeds demand’ and the government was taking steps to address that. He said that the government’s ‘ambition’ was to hit 200,000 tests ‘by the end of this month - and then go even higher’.
In March, Johnson targeted 250,000 coronavirus tests a day but has since refused to put a timescale on that figure.
He also revealed that he would be setting out plans to begin lifting the coronavirus lockdown on 12 May, suggesting that some of the measures could then come into force the following day (Monday 13 May). The government must review lockdown measures on 9 May.
