Coronavirus deaths in UK now highest in Europe
The Office for National Statistics has published its latest data which shows that the UK now has the highest death toll in Europe from coronavirus.
The statistics show that 29,648 deaths were registered in England and Wales by 2 May with coronavirus mentioned on the death certificates. When including deaths in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the death toll sits at at least 32,313 - which exceeds the death toll of 29,029 in Italy.
Ministers and experts have warned against international comparisons, saying the figure for excess mortality is a more meaningful gauge.
Of the coronavirus deaths registered up to 1 May in England and Wales, 6,686 took place in care homes, which was 22.5 per cent of all the deaths from the virus by that point. The government has only recently begun including data on deaths outside hospitals in cases where people had tested positive for coronavirus in the daily death toll figures for the virus.
