Charge for migrants to use the NHS doubles
The standard Immigration Health Surcharge has doubled from £200 to £400 a year, a sum the Home Office says will bring much-needed funds to the NHS.
The doubling of the charge for migrants to use the NHS has been widely condemned for its impact on NHS workers and young people who have been in the UK since childhood, with some suggesting that increased fees could lead to a new Windrush scandal, as people unable to pay could lose their legal status.
Fees have now risen by a total of 238 per cent since 2014. The campaign group Let Us Learn has continued protesting the fee increase and has again requested a meeting with the Minister of State for Immigration, Caroline Nokes, to discuss the increase which could ‘rip people away from their homes and families’.
However, the Home Office maintains that the surcharge increase will raise much-needed money for ‘sustaining and protecting’ the healthcare system in the UK, reiterating that Parliament approved increasing the immigration health surcharge ‘so it better reflects the actual costs to the NHS’.
