NHS recruitment hindered by immigration rules

Amid a row after visas for 100 Indian doctors were refused, health leaders are warning that current immigration rules are hindering the NHS’ ability to recruit doctors.

According to reports, increasing numbers of doctors are being refused UK visas, with the lack of skilled non-EU workers contributing to poorer rota gaps and longer waits that patients face for treatment. Currently, the Home Office maintain that the restriction is in ‘the national interest’, despite NHS Improvement warning one in 11 posts was vacant.

Visas for 100 Indian doctors, who had been recruited as part of a long-running scheme in the North West, were refused - leading to calls for Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Home Secretary Amber Rudd to urgently look into the problem.
