Unions close to agreeing three-year NHS pay deal

Reports have suggested that health unions are close to negotiating a pay deal for NHS staff well above the cap imposed by ministers in recent years.

With the government having claimed it would scrap the one per cent cap on public sector pay, current talks between the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS Employers are constructive and nearing a finalisation. Any outline agreement between the two sides will need final approval from ministers.

Nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants, ambulance staff and all other workers, except doctors and dentists, would benefit from the scrapping of the pay cap.

Some media outlets, such as the Guardian, have claimed that the government is set to offer nearly one million NHS staff a 6.5 per cent pay rise over the next three years, in exchange for health workers sacrificing up a day’s holiday in return for the £3.3 billion deal. However, such reports have been described as premature.
