NHS workforce statistics, released by NHS Digital for International Women’s Day, shows that while women make up over three quarters of all NHS staff, they are still in the minority in senior roles.
There has, however, been an increase in the proportion of hospital and community doctors who are women, with women now making up over three quarters of all NHS staff. The number of female hospital and community health service doctors increased by nearly 11,000 in the last eight years, with the number of male doctors rising by just over 4,000 for the same period.
The improvement can also be recognised in 37 per cent of all senior roles now being held by women compared with 31 per cent in 2009, and 36 per cent of consultants now are women compared with 30 per cent in 2009.
Furthermore, 44 per cent of all chief executives across NHS trusts, CCGs, supporting organisations and central bodies are women, compared to 38 per cent in 2009.
