Two-year wait for gender identity NHS appointment

Despite NHS England pledging to bring waiting times to below 18 weeks by 2018, transgender people are waiting up to two and a half years for initial consultations at NHS gender identity clinics.

New figures show that the average wait from receiving a GP referral to getting a first appointment is 18 months, although some trusts’ waiting times reach far beyond that. Figures show that Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Gender Clinic’s current waiting time for an initial appointment is two and a half years, the longest in England, with Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust Gender Identity Service having the shortest waiting time at 51 weeks.

With a number of organisations saying that demand is currently outstripping supply - the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has recorded a rise of 55.25 per cent in referrals made - NHS England has said that providers are ‘working to expand treatment teams and reduce waiting time’.
