NHS chief announces four new mother and baby units

The head of the NHS has announced four new mother and baby units in a web chat on Mumsnet.

Simon Stevens said the units would allow women to stay with their babies when receiving specialist care.

One in five women experience mental ill health during pregnancy or in the year after birth. This includes depression, anxiety and postpartum psychosis.

They will provide in-patient support for women and their babies with the most complex needs who require hospital care, who are experiencing severe mental health crisis.

The units will be at Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust, Devon NHS Partnership Trust, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust and Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. They will be opening next year.

Stevens said: “The NHS is serious about delivering more personalised care to new mums and that includes better specialist mental health care for those who need it.

“Having a baby should be one of happiest, most life-changing experiences and every mum should have the opportunity to bond with her baby, while receiving the care she needs and remaining as close to her families as possible.”
