The boards of Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust and The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust will meet next week to discuss the future of their partnership.
The public meeting will analyse options for taking the partnership forward and recommends forming a single combined organisation with fully integrated clinical services. It is understood that if the trusts remain as separate organisations they will struggle to maintain the range of patient services they currently provide.
This could be exasperated by staff shortages and recruitment problems, with some services currently provided at Colchester and Ipswich hospitals potentially moving to larger regional centres in London, Cambridge and Norwich.
David White, chairman of both trusts said: “By thinking differently and working together we can change the way we deliver care and provide excellent services that are vital for the future of the communities we serve. Many patients, staff and supporters have helped us to get to this stage in our partnership and I am immensely grateful for their time and effort.”
Nick Hulme, chief executive of both trusts added: “I feel a strong sense of pride and commitment to a new future for both hospitals. It is a tremendous opportunity for us to change the way we do things, to be bold, innovative and imaginative in delivering the best possible healthcare to people who live in east Suffolk and north east Essex.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
