The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has launched a series of systematic reviews to help clinicians identify the signs of physical abuse and neglect.
‘Child Protective Evidence’ reviews were originally carried out by Cardiff University in association with the NSPCC and has now been taken over by the RCPCH.
The reviews include the latest evidence on a series of areas, including: fractures; neurological injuries; bruises; burns; bites; and spinal injuries, among others.
They also look at evidence on neglect and around particular age groups, including: early years neglect; school age neglect/emotional abuse; teenage abuse; dental neglect; and parent-child interaction.
Neena Modi, president of the RCPCH, said: “COREINFO has long been an essential resource for all those working in child protection, bringing together the latest evidence with sensible guidance for clinical practice when faced with having to consider the possibility of neglect or physical child abuse.
“It is tragic that last year over 58,000 children in the UK were identified to be in need of protection from abuse. Professionals working with children have to remain vigilant, and having a reliable source of evidence is invaluable.
“Cardiff University are to be congratulated on a magnificent piece of work in establishing and managing the resource. The RCPCH has considered it a privilege to work with them and the NSPCC to keep the reviews current and relevant for the child protection workforce. RCPCH will now be updating, hosting and disseminating the reviews and look forward to working with colleagues to ensure they remain an indispensable resource.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
