Action programme for NHS set out

Turning the corner on primary care investment and meeting the A&E waiting time target will be key priorities for the NHS over the next two years, the head of NHS England has said.

Speaking at Confed17, Simon Stevens, NHS England chief executive, said the NHS will need to reach the 95 per cent four-hour A&E waiting time target by the end of this year.

Other priorities include primary care, mental health and cancer treatments waiting times, three areas that he said need to be ‘firmly on [the] agenda for the year ahead’.

On primary care, Stevens spoke about turning the corner on investment in general practice, adding that 'the primary care is absolutely essential'.
