Antidepressant prescriptions rise 48.5 per cent

According to figures obtained via an ITV freedom of information (FoI) request, the number of patients being prescribed antidepressants by their GPs in Jersey has increased by almost half.

Data revealed that the amount of people being prescribed antidepressant drugs rose by 48.5 per cent between 2010 and 2016.

Statistics show more than 98,000 prescriptions were made for antidepressants last year, costing a total of more than half a million pounds. It also highlighted that 8,190 people were treated using antidepressants in 2016.

The drugs can be used for conditions other than depression, including chronic pain.

The actual number is expected to be much higher as the figures do not include drugs prescribed privately or those prescribed in secondary care.
