Dr Mary Black at Public Health England (PHE) has argued that tolerating tobacco smoking on NHS premises is a form of collusion.
Writing in The BMJ, Black argues that staff who smoke in NHS uniforms are sending a very clear pro-tobacco signal, while staff who smoke with patients are ‘empathising in a harmful way’.
PHE are currently campaigning for a completely tobacco-free NHS. Duncan Selbie, chief executive of PHE, wrote to all NHS Trusts in November to further the cause and continue raising awareness of the dangers associated with smoking at hospitals.
Black said: “The NHS is not yet smoke free. But it’s time that it was. If this had happened years ago then perhaps I would not be able to darn so well. Perhaps my father would still be alive.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
