‘Opt out’ organ donor system calls renewed
Doctors have renewed their calls for England to have similar organ-donor rules to the ‘opt-out’ system proving successful in Wales.
Wales became the first nation in the UK to introduce a ‘soft opt out’ organ-donation system in December 2015, whereby those who have lived in Wales for more than 12 months and have not registered to ‘opt out’ of donation are automatically regarded as having offered ‘deemed consent’ to donate if they die.
Public support for the extension of some kind of opt-out system to England appears to be growing, after the number of transplants during the schemes first year have been significantly boosted in Wales. Since December 2015, 160 organs have been transplanted in Wales, almost a quarter of which were donated through ‘deemed consent’. Additionally, only six per cent of the Welsh population has opted out of donation since the scheme's introduction.
