Early success for Welsh GP recruitment drive

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones has praised the early success of a recruitment campaign aimed at boosting the number of GPs in Wales.

The BMA Welsh GPs committee has said it was aware of an increase in the number of applications from within the UK, heralding it as a move in the right direction. Charlotte Jones, chair of the committee, also stressed the need to ‘keep the doctors we've got’ and ‘we have got problems here and now and they're not going to be available to the workforce in terms of making a difference to the pressures GPs face day to day’.

Jones said: “We launched the first phase of the national and international recruitment campaign last October, aimed at attracting doctors, particularly GPs, to train, work and live in Wales, and the indications are that the number of applications for GP training has increased, including in those areas where we have introduced an incentive-based approach.

“I can say that the cabinet secretary agreed plans for phase two of the recruitment campaign earlier this week, aimed at other healthcare professionals in primary care.”
