New figures suggest that the number of people falling ill with the vomiting bug norovirus in England this winter is at higher than average levels.
In hospitals there have been 100 outbreaks of the bug, while lab testing has revealed there have been 1,704 cases so far. This is nine per cent higher than the average seen at this stage in the previous five winters, and only considers those seeking NHS help.
Hospital outbreaks cause hospitals to close down beds and whole wards at what is the busiest and most difficult time of the year.
Meanwhile, NHS England’s first winter statistics of the year show that eight hospitals have declared a major alert in the first four days of December - likely due to bed shortages, ambulances queuing outside and patients waiting longer inside A&E.
To tackle the alert, hospitals have to call in extra staff, cancel routine treatments and divert ambulances away from their hospital.

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
