IMNOVID or Pomalidomide, a drug which has been used to help treat patients will blood cancers in Scotland, Wales and Ireland has been given the green light for use in England.
The drug is used to treat multiple myeloma, an incurable disease and the biggest blood cancer killer in the UK.
The, news comes after Pomalidomide was removed from the Cancer Drugs Fund in 2015, but will now be available to all UK patients who qualify.
This brings England in line with the rest of the UK and Europe, where this treatment has been a standard of care for years.
The news has bee welcomed by the clinical community and the multiple myeloma patients, whereby the blood cancer usually requires a different treatment option at every stage of disease.
Dr. Kevin Boyd, Consultant Haematologist at The Royal Marsden Hospital commented: “Pomalidomide is an important treatment for people affected by late stage multiple myeloma; we know that it is an effective medicine and can be taken by patients long term. It is very reassuring that the medicine will be available to patients as the only National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) approved treatment at this stage of the disease.
