Public Health England (PHE) and NHS England have launched the Stay Well This Winter campaign which advises over 65s to eat hot meals and keep active in order to cope with the cold weather.
The campaign is aimed at helping the vulnerable stay well and out of A&E. It includes tips such as setting a thermostat to no lower than 18C, wrapping up warm and consuming hot meals and drinks.
Data from the Office for National Statistics has indicated that there were 43,900 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2014/15, 27 per cent more deaths compared to the rest of the year.
The campaign advised: "Food is a vital source of energy, which keeps your body warm. Try to make sure that you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day and keep active in the home if you can."
Professor Keith Willett, medical director for acute care at NHS England, said: "The NHS is here to help, but there are important things we can all do to take care of ourselves during the winter months.
"It is vital that the most vulnerable people take preventative steps to keep healthy and stay well."

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
