£50m winter investment in Welsh NHS

The Welsh NHS will receive £50 million to sustain and improve performance during the busy winter period, Vaughan Gething has said.

The investment, up from an extra £45 million in 2015, will look to prevent routine surgery being cancelled and to continue tackling waiting lists. Measures will include opening more beds, improving patient flow through the hospital system and speeding up discharges.

The funding announcement was complimented by a call for people to choose the right service for their needs, to save time and free up emergency services.

The Welsh NHS is also set to trail a 24-hour health advice line for non-emergencies in the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg area.

Vaughan Gething, Cabinet Secretary for Health, said: “The NHS will receive £50 million this year to sustain performance and meet the increased demand placed on services going into the winter period. We are investing in the NHS, but everyone in Wales can play their part by choosing well.”

Andrew Goodall, NHS Wales chief executive, added: “It's trying to give a balance between elective patients coming in and emergencies and just to recognise that organisations have been trying to focus on better waiting times for their patients.

“A&E is for people who are very sick or badly injured and unless this is the case you will get the right care quicker by choosing well. Even if the A&E is closer, it is not the best place to go to for most health problems.”
