A report on the Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has warned that more needs to be done to improve the diagnosis and management of children with autism
It maintained that while staff were ‘enthusiastic’ there was a ‘lack of parental faith’ in the system.
The review, carried out by Dr Karen Horridge, paediatric consultant in disability at Sunderland Royal Hospital, also identified problems with feedback times, variations in clinical facilities, and administration shortages.
It recommended: consulting with parents to simplify and speed up the assessment and treatment process; develop plans to improve education and awareness of all services that come into contact with children and young people; agree an approach and develop plans to build multi-agency competency for all involved in the assessment, management and support of children and young people with autism spectrum conditions; and develop a robust mechanism for care planning and support for families at the point of diagnosis.
Dr Raj Verma, from the Trust has pledged that it was already putting forward ideas to improve the care process which aims to ‘individualise autism assessment, to ensure early intervention and support is the best it can be.’

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
