Brexit offers opportunity to reform legislation on GMC, Hunt says

In an interview with the Nursing Times, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said that Britain’s decision to leave the EU could offer the government an opportunity to reform professional regulators.

Speaking to the Paper, the Health Secretary expressed disapproval over the speed in which regulators had dealt with issues brought to their attention, and accepted that the government had failed to find parliamentary time to make changes necessary to help improve the situation.

In response to being asked if there was unfinished business following the Mid Staffordshire scandal, Hunt said: “If there is an area where there is legitimate cause for concern, it is the speed at which the Nursing Medical Council (NMC) and General Medical Council (GMC) act in certain situations.

”In that respect, it is partly my fault because they have been arguing for a long time for improvements in their legislation to allow them to speed up the way in which they look at cases brought to their attention by the public, and we have committed to do that, but we haven’t been able to find a legislative slot yet.

Hunt maintained that while he did not support the initial vote to leave the EU, ‘there is a Brexit induced opportunity here because we will have to relook at all the regulations post-Brexit.’

The news comes as the GMC has highlighted the importance of changing rules to allow more overseas doctors to work in the UK, a cause Hunt also claimed to be ‘very sympathetic towards’.
