Hospital parking charges on the rise, Press Association finds

An investigation by the Press Association has found that a third of hospital trusts in England have increased their car parking charges over the last year.

The research showed that around a third of trusts had increased their charges by an average of 15 per cent, with some hospitals charging £4 for a one hour stay.

The study combined figures obtained from NHS trusts and data submitted to statistics body NHS Digital.

Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford was identified as the most expensive trust in England, charging £4 for any stay up to two hours.

Alf Turner, deputy chief executive of the Trust, claimed that the charge was necessary to cover running costs and fund the expansion of the car park that is taking place.

Meanwhile, parking at Trafford General Hospital in Greater Manchester is free for up to three hours.

Laura Keely, campaigns manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, outlined that charges were particularly unfair to cancer patients.

She explained: ”They often need to make frequent trips to hospital. They should not be left out of pocket in order to receive life-saving treatment.
