The Royal College of Surgeons has published a checklist on its website offering advice to patients seeking cosmetic surgery on how to pick the right hospital and doctor.
The checklist involves questions to ask when considering surgery, including verification that the surgeon chosen is certified and insured and that the patients is aware of what to expect in regard to recovery.
The new online resource has been funded by the Department of Health in a bid to avoid future catastrophes such as the breast PIP implant scandal of 2012, where thousands of women in Britain were fitted with unsafe silicone implants which were prone to rupture.
Official figures show there were over 51,000 cosmetic procedures performed in the private sector in England last year.
Mr Stephen Cannon, vice-president of the RCS, commented: “The vast majority of cosmetic surgery is carried out in the private sector and many people do not realise that the law currently allows any qualified doctor - surgeon or otherwise - to perform cosmetic surgery, without undertaking additional training or qualifications.
"Our advice is that if you are thinking of having some kind of work done, make sure you consult a surgeon who is trained and experienced in the procedure you are considering.
"Look them up on the General Medical Council's register."

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
