Junior doctors take contract dispute to high court
The group Justice for Health is mounting a legal challenge to take the junior doctor dispute to the High Court, in an attempt to stop the government imposing the new contract.
The group has said the contract is unsafe and unsustainable and has accused Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt of acting outside his powers.
The hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London will run for two days.
The group's founding members are all junior doctors and include Dr Nadia Masood, Dr Ben White, Dr Fran Silman, Dr Amar Mashru and Dr Marie-Estella McVeigh.
The medics have argued that, although Mr Hunt is entitled to ‘recommend’ a new contract, he has no power to decide the terms and conditions under which the NHS and other bodies should employ junior doctors.
The news come as junior doctors have planned a series of five-day strikes in October, November and December in protest of the new contract.
