‘Outstanding' rating for specialist hospital

A specialist heart and chest hospital in Liverpool has become the UK's first to be rated ‘outstanding’ for the specialist treatment it offers.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) deemed Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as ‘of exceptional quality’, with the staff and volunteers at the hospital gaining extra praise for creating ‘a very positive culture throughout the trust’.

The trust, based in Broadgreen, Liverpool, runs the largest single-site specialist heart and chest hospital in England, specialising in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine including adult cystic fibrosis and diagnostic imaging.

Prof Sir Mike Richards, chief inspector of hospitals at the CQC, highlighted the trust's chest X-ray competency tool, calling it ‘a great example of the trust leading in its field’.

He said: "This is a trust that clearly has patient-centred care as a priority, evidenced by consistent positive feedback. They are prepared to innovate and work collaboratively across all staff groups."
