Possible Liverpool hospital merger

Four Liverpool hospitals could merge after a leaked report showed that the NHS faces a black hole of nearly £1 billion in Merseyside and Cheshire.

The leaked paper claims that the region’s NHS will be £999 million in the red by 2021 due to funding shortages and spiralling costs.

The leaked document, reported upon by The Liverpool Echo, warns the annual cost of running the NHS in Merseyside and Cheshire will rise to £6.8 billion by 2021, but income will only be £5.8 billion.

As a consequence, Royal Liverpool, Broadgreen, Aintree and Liverpool Women’s hospitals could be merged, with Liverpool hospitals trusts expected to cut £167 million over the next five years.
