CareCERT cyber security focus to expand

NHS Digital will expand its Care Computer Emergency Response Team (CareCERT) cyber security service to improve the resilience of its systems.

Nicola Blackwood, public health and innovation minister, told the audience of the Health and Care Innovation Expo in Manchester that testing will begin on new functions to help care organisations with better defending themselves against potential digital threats.

An NCC Group freedom of information request last month revealed that 47 per cent of NHS trusts have been subject to a ransomware attack in the past year.

The new functions will include a new e-learning portal, called CareCERT React, which is designed to train staff in cyber security basics to help secure patient information.

Blackwood said: “NHS Digital’s CareCERT service will help over 1.3 million NHS staff and those working in care staff boost their awareness and knowledge, as well as helping organisations improve their defences and keep valuable patient information secure. If the worst should happen, the service will also help organisations respond as quickly as possible.”

CareCERT was originally launched by NHS Digitalin November 2015, and is funded through the Cabinet Office National Cyber Security Programme (NCSP).
