More to be done in tackling GP indemnity fees

The British Medical Association (BMA) has warned that, despite initial steps to tackle rocketing GP indemnity fees, more needs to be done.

As part of NHS England’s GP Forward View, a multi-billion pound investment in general practice has been drawn up, with £60 million set aside for practices over two years to offset indemnity inflation.

NHS England has also announced plans to reintroduce the winter indemnity scheme, which reimbursed costs for out-of-hours sessions worked by GPs, with doctors working 14,000 more shifts last year as a result.

A four-year £40 million ‘resilience fund’, announced as part of the investment plans, will also be supplemented by a three-year £30 million ‘development programme’, designed to address systemic staffing and financial pressures on practices.

Chaand Nagpaul, the BMA’s GPs committee chair, said: “While this is an important and significant recognition of the impact of rising GP indemnity fees, we see this as only a first step. There is a need for a definitive solution to rocketing indemnity costs, which are also mentioned in NHS England’s proposals.”
