Initial figures from Health Education England (HEE) have shown that almost ninety per cent of GP training places have been filled across the UK, after two rounds of recruitment.
The provisional data revealed that there are just 3,790 UK training places still being advertised, a vast improvement on last year when one in five places were left unfilled.
However, the statistics have shown that there are some areas still straggling behind, with the North East region showing a 40 per cent vacancy rate.
The news comes after a range of efforts have been undertaken to boost GP trainee recruitment, including providing £20,000 bursaries for doctors to train as a GP in under-doctored areas such as Blackpool and Lincolnshire.
