Scottish hospitals ‘ignored’ suicide warnings
The BBC has revealed that 50 people have taken their own lives in Scottish hospitals over the past four years.
Despite pledges from the Scottish government to reduce the number of suicides, figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that 50 patients have taken their own lives while in hospital over the past four years.
The deaths, including at Glasgow's new £82 million flagship hospital, occurred despite repeated warnings over health and safety measures, leaving the victims families questioning why more wasn’t done to prevent the deaths.
The BBChas also revealed that the Queen Elizabeth University hospital in Glasgow was constructed with ligature points, even though board warnings were voiced.
Although overall figures are falling, Scotland maintains one of the highest suicide rates in the UK, particularly noticeable within hospitals.
