Mark Porter re-elected as BMA chair

Mark Porter has been re-elected as council chair of the British Medical Association for a further year.

The consultant anaesthetist in Coventry will return to his position until 2017 following a BMA council meeting at the annual representative meeting in Belfast. In 2017, his five year-term will be completed - the maximum for the position. His position was contested by consultant psychiatrist Dr JS Bamrah.

Porter said: “It is a tremendous privilege to represent the profession for another year as BMA council chair. The challenges facing doctors and the health service we cherish have never been greater. Doctors are at the sharp end of the impact of chronic underfunding, staff shortages and rising demand on the NHS.

“Over the past year, and in the face of difficult contract negotiations, the BMA has proven itself to be a strong, independent voice not only for the medical profession, but for the patients we serve. I look forward to continuing with this vital work at a pivotal time for doctors from across the profession and for the NHS as a whole.”
