The BMA is calling on the government of offer greater clarity over proposed plans for extended weekend opening for GP practices.
The call comes after Jeremy Hunt told Pulse: “A significant majority thinks GP surgeries should offer appointments seven days a week - but that does not mean it will be the same level on a Sunday afternoon as a Saturday morning.”
This apparent softening of his stance suggests that Sunday opening may not need the same level of staffing or the same opening hours as other days of the week, but the BMA says that the government needs to be more ‘open and honest’ about its plans for weekend provision.
Richard Vautrey, BMA GPs committee deputy chair, said that Hunt’s comments were in line with the General Practice Forward View which ‘backs away from full weekend appointment provision and gives clinical commissioning groups flexibility to provide services that meet locally determined demand’.
Vautrey urged ministers to clear up the ‘mixed messages’ about Sunday GP services and be more open about ‘what is affordable and what is actually being put in place.’

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
