GP rescue package delayed, Pulse reports

According to Pulse, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s rescue package to ease pressures on general practice has been delayed following disagreements regarding the size of promised funding.

It has been reported that the Department of Health (DoH) has proposed a £110 million rescue package of measures, including a refreshed retainers scheme and over 100 £20,000 bursaries in a bid to tempt GP trainees to work in hard-to-recruit areas.

While the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) was unable to comment on the specific amount which was being discussed with DoH officials, it maintained that it was pushing for a much larger figure than the one currently offered.

GPC deputy chair Dr Richard Vautrey said: “The package keeps being delayed and we are not quite sure when it is going to be announced. I suspect it is going to be money [holding it up]. Have they got enough money to do what GPs and practices are now expecting of them?

"£110 million is not going to go anywhere. We have seen them find billions of pounds for hospital trusts that are in deficit, general practice is in deficit effectively to a similar degree, and needs that comparable resource."
