Hunt accused of misrepresenting data on seven-day NHS

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has been criticised by MPs who claim he ‘misrepresented’ data regarding his case for a seven-day NHS in England.

In particular, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called for an investigation into the data Hunt and the rest of the government used to scaffold its argument for the changes to junior doctor’s contracts.

According to an investigation by the BBC, Hunt had used academically unverified and unpublished data to back his plans. Furthermore, his claim that there were around 6,000 deaths per year due to the lack of ‘a proper seven-day service’ has been questioned.

In fact, the author of the research paper from which Hunt obtained the 6,000 figure has reportedly told authorities he was unhappy with how the study was being used.

Corbyn maintained that the ‘dispute with junior doctors has been on the basis of misrepresented research’. However, Prime Minister David Cameron has defended Hunt, insisting the new contract was necessary in order to introduce more seven-day services.
