Three wards at Leicester’s Royal Infirmary have closed following an outbreak of swine flu, where 14 cancer patients were diagnosed with the H1N1 strain of influenza.
The patients have been isolated to avoid a further outbreak, with experts warning that people suffering from cold and flu symptoms should avoid hospitals.
The news follows eight other incidents of swine flu in the UK, reported in the last seven days, although they are not thought to be connected.
Liz Collins, lead nurse for infection prevention, said: ”Fourteen patients on three Haematology wards at the Leicester Royal Infirmary have developed symptoms that have been confirmed as flu. All necessary precautions were taken and these patients have been isolated to avoid an outbreak.”
