The second junior doctors’ strike, organised by the British Medical Association (BMA), has begun, with almost 3,000 operations being cancelled due to the walk out.
For 24 hours from 8am 10 February junior doctors will only provide emergency care, representing a change from original plans to stage a 48 hours full walk out with no emergency cover.
The strike follows a breakdown of last minute talks between the BMA, NHS Employers and the Department of Health over the new contract or junior doctors in England.
Dr Johann Malawana, the BMA junior doctors leader, tweeted on Tuesday 9 February: “We presented fully costed and working solution that was rejected due to pride and politics.”
The disputes have been ongoing since 2014 and centres on changes to junior doctors’ contracts, with the classification of ‘regular working hours’ remaining a the main sticking point in negotiations.
According to reports from the Telegraph, an Ipsos Mori poll shows overall support for the industrial action, with those who ‘strongly support’ rising from 41 per cent to 49 per cent. Additionally, 64 per cent of those polled blamed the government for the dispute going on for so long, while only 13 per cent blamed junior doctors and 18 per cent blamed both sides equally.

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
