GP mass resignation proposal approved

The proposal for GPs to consider a potential mass resignation has been approved at the Special (local medical communities) LMC conference, where delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of the motion.

The move would involve allowing ‘the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) to canvass GPs on their willingness to submit undated resignations’ unless ’negotiations with government for a rescue package for general practice’ are ’concluded successfully within six months’.

However, the original motion suggested the GPC request undated resignations at the six-month deadline, rather than just ‘canvassing’, as it was altered to at the conference.

The conference was called to examine ‘what actions are needed to ensure GPs can deliver a safe and sustainable service’ after concerns regarding workforce, workload and lack of funding.

The Department of Health (DoH) has pledged a package containing substantial funding and support, which is reported to include ‘measures on workforce, workload and service redesign’.

GPC chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said he was ‘very happy’ to support the motion because GPs have to do everything possible to support general practice.
