Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the UK, claiming
roughly 180,000 lives a year. Current guidelines advise doctors to give statin
tablets to an estimated seven million people who have a 20 per cent risk of
developing heart disease in the next ten years. NICE now recommends that those
with a ten per cent risk should be offered the drug.
The NHS currently spends about £450 million on statins every year, which would
stand to increase significantly if the new guidelines are followed– although it
is not yet clear how many more people would be prescribed statins under the new
rules.
Some medical practitioners expressed concern over the NICE recommendations. Prof
Simon Maxwell of the British Pharmacological Society said: "Patients should be
helped to make a truly informed decision about the benefits and risks of taking
long-term preventative therapy that will not make them feel any better in the
short term. We should avoid misapplication of such a recommendation without
proper individual patient counselling."

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
