Too many patients are dying without dignity, says Ombudsman’s report

The investigation focusses on 12 cases of inadequate end of life care that illustrate issues regularly seen in the Ombudsman’s casework.

Based on these case studies, ‘Dying without dignity’ highlights a need for the NHS to improve in a number of key areas, which are: recognising that people are dying; making sure that symptoms are properly controlled; communicating with people, their families and and each other; providing out of hours services; and making sure that service delivery and organisation help people have a good death. The report claims that by improving in these areas, the NHS would ‘improve the experience of the dying immeasurably’.
