The report investigated information provided by 222 commissioners in England and Northern Ireland and health boards in Wales which showed an overwhelming range of services. The audit post-acute stroke services occurs in only 37 per cent of areas and 25 per cent of commissioning bodies do not have an allocated lead for stroke services. Care home residents are disadvantaged because only one third of commissioned services provide treatment to people living in care home.
The second report, expected by the end of the year, will demonstrate what a patient might expect to receive in waiting times for treatment and intensity and duration of treatment. The report will cover resources needed to provide service including team numbers and expertise.
Dr Geoffrey Cloud FRCP, associate director for stroke (CEEU), said: “Stroke mortality has almost halved in the last decade within the NHS and people are spending less time in hospital recovering from their stroke. There has never been a more important time than now to look systematically at what stroke care people receive when they leave hospital. This inaugural SSNAP community-based organisation audit is the first step towards this. We have been delighted and encouraged by the overwhelming participation of CCGS, LCGs and health boards and hope the results will be a useful starting point for community stroke service improvement locally, regionally and nationally.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
