Medical Research Council and Innovate UK launch £18 million research fund
The MRC contributed £13 million while the government body Innovate UK contributed £5 million. Oxford University have been awarded £700,000 as a part of the fund to develop a new flu vaccine that attacks the core of the virus rather than one particular strain.
Bath University received £900,000 for the development of a wound dressing for burn victims that detects infection, while Glasgow based company Ohmedics received £759,000 for the development of a device that can be used at home to check for lung infections caused by bacteria and fungi.
Minister for Life Sciences George Freeman said: "The UK's healthcare industry has a worldwide reputation for excellence.
"By providing early support to these latest treatment and diagnosis developments, we are not only going to potentially help improve or save lives, we are helping businesses grow and boost the UK's productivity."
