BMA to open ballot for junior doctors strike action

The BMA has said that it is not a decision it has taken lightly and is fully aware of the implications, but believes it is the right thing to do ‘to defend the current and next generations of junior doctors’.

The ballot is in response to government proposals to impose new contracts on junior doctors next year, which has led to an ongoing dispute between health professionals and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

The BMA has said it will only re-enter negotiations if the government gives a number of concrete assurances. These include: Proper recognition of unsocial hours as premium time; No disadvantage for those working unsocial hours compared to current system; No disadvantage for those working less than full time and taking parental leave compared to the current system; Pay for all work done; and proper hours safeguards protecting patients and their doctors.

Papers will be sent to all doctors who are eligible on 5 November, with the ballot closing 18 November.
