According to NHS England, the rising cost of indemnity has been flagged as a major barrier to care by out of hours providers, and so the Winter Indemnity Scheme has been developed with the Medical Defence Organisation (MDO) to offset additional costs for GPs who with to work additional sessions over the winter to meet increased demand.
The scheme is set to run between December 2015 and March 2016 and aims to enable doctors to commit to more out of hours sessions without the need to negotiate additional changes to their level of indemnity cover.
This indemnity package will be accessed via the MDO’s websites, who will then invoice NHS England directly on a monthly basis.
Rosamond Roughton, director of NHS Commissioning, said: “Rising indemnity costs are having a serious impact on GPs as well as stifling innovation in primary care delivery. We are determined to help resolve this issue and this announcement is just part of the work we are doing with our partners to further support GPs and the wider care primary care workforce.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
