Presumed consent organ donation could be introduced

Following its introduction in Wales and Scotland, reports have suggested that England could introduce the so-called presumed consent system of organ donation.

The system, in which people have to actively opt out if they do not wish to be donors, saw an immediate rise in the availability of organs to help seriously ill patients after its introduction in December 2015.

The UK, which experienced its highest-ever rate of organs transplanted in the last year, could follow the steps of Scotland who recently announced plans for a ‘soft opt-out’ system.

Scottish Health Minister Aileen Campbell said campaigns and work with patients’ families had already led to an increase of 146 per cent in the number of donations since 2007.

A No 10 spokeswoman said: “Organ donation hit a record high last year, and we obviously want that to continue to rise. We are keeping a close eye on how the changes in Wales and Scotland are affecting donation rates in considering if we would change our policy.”
