‘Major ramp-up’ needed in children’s mental health services

NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens has claimed that children's mental health services is in need of ‘a major ramp-up’ to cope with the rising challenges faced by young people in the UK.

Interviewed in The House magazine, Stevens called on social media companies to share the burden of mental health issues in young people, and, given the recent WHO recognition of gaming addiction as new disorder, suggested that the level of undiagnosed mental health problems and distress is likely to be much higher than has official previously been recorded.

In light of a change in conversation on mental health in the last few years, where ‘stigma has reduced and people are willing to come forward’, the NHS England chief executive said that ‘ a major ramp up under any scenario of young people’s mental health services’ has to be ‘one of the big things that comes out of the long-term NHS plan’.

Stevens was speaking ahead of the NHS 70 anniversary in July, and a few weeks after Prime Minister Theresa May pledged to give the NHS an extra £20 billion a year by 2023.
