Delayed plan to merge hospital trusts must go ahead

Bedford Mayoral candidate Gianni Carofano has reiterated that a delayed plan to merge Bedford with Luton & Dunstable hospitals must get the green light to release millions of pounds for frontline NHS services.

The two hospital trusts were due to merge in April 2018, but plans stalled when a bid for the £100 million the NHS said was needed to create a single foundation trust was rejected by the Treasury. Alternative funding plans are still waiting to be established.

Carofano said: "The reason the merger needs to happen is because it is a merger of two trusts - you go from two to one with half the running costs. £10-14 million is a lot of money that can be invested in front line services - in doctors and nurses.”

Current Bedford Mayor, Liberal Democrat Dave Hodgson, said it was essential that Bedford retained its Accident and Emergency, maternity and paediatric departments, arguing that no other hospital in the area can cope with the number of births in the area each year.
