Nursing staff at Weston General Hospital are switching to smartphone-based technology to replace the current paper-based systems.
The trust has teamed up with Perfect Ward to implement an app, which uses technology to simplify nursing audits that review the quality of the care patients receive.
Previously, these audits were paper-based which meant staff spent a significant amount of time writing up findings and analysing results. However, the new system will allow staff to capture ward inspections on their smartphones or tablets which provide instant feedback, allowing results to be instantly shared with colleagues.
The app is already beings used by a number of different trusts, including London Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital.
Commenting on the technology, Sally Matravers, associate director of Nursing at Weston Area Health NHS Trust, said: “We’re excited to be adopting Perfect Ward. The quality of the care we provide to our patients is our upmost priority and undertaking regular assessments of care helps us to understand how we are doing and where we need to improve.
“Using this technology will help improve the consistency and efficiency of our audits, as we’re able to see results immediately and take actions promptly to ensure our patients receive the best possible care.
“The Perfect Ward app, which is incredibly straight forward to use, makes the process easy for our nurses, saves us time and improves the detail and quality of our inspections.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
