Cancer Drugs Fund makes new treatments available on the NHS earlier

NHS patients in England are getting early access to new drugs for lung cancer and sarcoma after NICE says they should be available on the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF).

Pembrolizumab for lung cancer and olaratumab for sarcoma are now available on the CDF at a discounted price while more information is gathered on their value.

A new rule made to NICE’s appraisal process for cancer drugs means that it can approve drugs that early studies show are effective but where more data is needed on their long-term benefits.

This rule also means that NICE can make recommendations earlier in the drug pipeline, meaning patients in England benefit sooner.

Professor Carole Longson, director of the NICE centre for health technology evaluation said: “With the changes that were made to the CDF, we are issuing guidance earlier than any other country in Europe. With companies working closely with us and NHS England we will continue to deliver on our promise to give people fast access to the most effective cancer drugs.”
